On June 27th, Dell celebrated its great momentous occasion with the shipment of our first product manufactured in Chengdu. Attending the ceremony at the Customs House in the Shuangliu Export Processing Zone were Ge Honglin, the Mayor of Chengdu city. Dell leaders, Amit Midha, President of Dell APJ, and Chairman of Dell Greater China, Michael Yang, President of Dell Greater China, Alex Yung, GM of China Large Enterprise & Public, and Becca Gould, Vice President of Global Government Affairs & Public Policy joined with other officials and guests for the shipping ceremony .
This milestone marks the first shipment of a “Made-in-Chengdu” product by a Chengdu-based partner in Dell’s global manufacturing network. Dell’s own factory, currently under construction, is expected to be in operation by Q2FY14 and will manufacture desktop and laptop computers to satisfy domestic and broader needs. The Chengdu operation augments our existing Xiamen operations in eastern China which primarily serve customers in the North Asia region.
Dell announced plans to open its second major China operations center in September 2010 in support of China’s Western-China Development Strategy (i.e. Go-West policy), aimed at developing the country’s inner-western region for trade and commerce. Favorable growth projections and China’s firm commitment to building a world-class supply chain ecosystem in Chengdu made it the optimal location for us to serve the needs of customers in China and beyond more quickly and efficiently. The strong Chengdu workforce and Dell’s new operations there will better position us for additional growth opportunities in western China.
As the center of west China, Chengdu is always one of the focuses of Dell’s development strategy in China. Dell keeps on contributing to the local community of Chengdu. On the same day, Mr. Michael Yang together with Chengdu employees donated 30 PC units and other education equipment to Chengdu Sansheng Elementary School for building the Dell Computer Classroom for its students. By leveraging our technology solutions, we hope to prepare Chinese young people for job, career and life readiness in 21st century.
We believe Dell's initiatives in Chengdu will become a strong contributor to China's IT industry growth in the western area, while further promoting Dell's development in this region.
